Tips for students flying abroad
- Most students fly one-way. Compare one-way fares rather than returns, unless you already know when you will come home.
- Students usually travel with a lot of luggage. Check each fare's checked-baggage allowance; adding a bag when you book is usually cheaper than at the airport.
- Some airlines offer student fares with extra baggage or free date changes. Check the airline's own website before you book.
- Book once your visa is approved, or choose a fare you can change: visa timelines can move.
- Plan to arrive a week or two before your course starts for accommodation, bank and university registration. Check your university's arrival dates and any airport pickup.
- On connecting flights, check the transit rules for your passport at the connecting airport.
Compare luggage allowances on our baggage pages by airline, and read paying with a Pakistani card before you book.
Frequently asked questions
Should students book a one-way or return ticket?
Most students book one-way, because they do not know when they will come home. Some visas or airlines may ask for onward travel plans, so check your visa conditions.
How much luggage can students take?
It depends on the airline and fare: often 23 to 46 kg in checked baggage on long-haul routes, sometimes less on cheaper fares. Check the fare details and our baggage pages, and add bags when you book.
When should I fly for the September intake?
Most students arrive one to three weeks before their course starts. Late August and September are busy, so book once your visa is approved.
Are there student discounts on flights?
Some airlines offer student fares with extra baggage or flexible dates. Check the airline's own website and compare with the fares here.
